Potatoes and Vegetables remain at the heart of our business and we work closely with Australian farmers in Tasmania, NSW, Victoria and Qld who have been growing potatoes and vegetables for generations. We now have an exciting opportunity for a Farming Agronomist to join our Agricultural Services business, based in Devonport, Tasmania. In this role you will provide our farming partners with the necessary guidance and support to produce a cost effective crop to meet the volume, quality and timing requirements for Simplot Australia’s production. This will enable a closer working relationship between Simplot Farming Partners and the Agronomy team.
Oversee crop growing to ensure crop inputs are timely. Responsibilities include planning crop areas, assessing paddocks for suitability, planning seed requirements, establishing planting plans and dates for field activities. Monitoring seed cutting activity and managing timeframes, overseeing planting activity and assessing planter performance, monitoring irrigation inputs and assist in delivery of irrigation plans. Check growing performance, estimating expected field yields and adjusting forecasted crop volumes. Communicating factory requirements to field staff and harvest workers, assist with crop harvest where possible and, deliver training of expected safety and quality requirements.
Provide the technical skills and advice/decisions in relation to crop agronomy, ensuring only appropriate and registered products are used to provide safe high quality food. Responsibilities include following crop husbandry protocol to grow within the budgeted expectations and report any out of budget inputs. Taking and assessing soil nutrient test results, making recommendations/decisions on nutrition prescriptions for each paddock/crop based on soil test results and, assessing electromagnetic site maps to build geo-referenced planting boundary maps. Make site specific recommendations of all agricultural chemicals inputs, ensuring all chemical and fertiliser applications are recorded correctly. Administer plant tissue tests and asses results to monitor crop performance and adjust nutrition program as required. Be involved with any relevant Simplot R&D trials and assist with learnings and observations where possible. Assist in Farming Partner and crop performance reviews.
Tertiary qualifications in Applied Science, Agricultural Science or a related discipline, you will also be experienced operating within a farming environment. Key skills to bring to the role include excellent communication, literacy, numeracy and computer skills and the ability to work well in a team. You will need to have an organised approach, excellent time management skills and a demonstrated competence in Word and Excel.
